Definition

(c. 1330-84). English philosopher, theologian and reformer. Unhappy with the state of the medieval Church and believing that the Bible should be the sole criterion of doctrine, he called for thorough-going reform, questioning, amongst other issues, the authority of the Pope, the validity of the religious life, and the doctrine of transubstantiation. A group of his Lollard followers translated the Bible into English (c. 1330-84).
