A-Z: General definitions: Jonah
The main character in the Old Testament book of Jonah. Jonah was a prophet sent by God to the city of Nineveh to preach to the people but he disobeyed. He spent three days in the belly of a whale. Jonah prayed and God gave him a second chance. Jonah's experience was later interpreted as prefiguring the three days which Jesus spent in the tomb between the Crucifixion and the Resurrection.
Story of Jonah's commission to take God's message of judgement to pagan Nineveh capital of Assyria; after disobedience and being swallowed by a large fish (whale) Jonah repents and delivers God's message; Nineveh repents and God has mercy on the city.
