A-Z: General definitions: Jonah

Definition

The main character in the Old Testament book of Jonah. Jonah was a prophet sent by God to the city of Nineveh to preach to the people but he disobeyed. He spent three days in the belly of a whale. Jonah prayed and God gave him a second chance. Jonah's experience was later interpreted as prefiguring the three days which Jesus spent in the tomb between the Crucifixion and the Resurrection.
