A-Z: General definitions: Metonymy
Definition
Figure of speech, wherein a certain quality of a thing or a person is used to represent it entirely. It could be allegorical or symbolic but not necessarily so. Thus 'the bottle' is metonymic for an alcoholic drink; or 'your majesty' is metonymic for the sovereign.
In literature, words are used in a non-literal sense much of the time, to make the language striking and persuasive. Sounds are also carefully arranged to have certain effects. This is all figurative language.
A non-realistic genre of literature whereby characters or episodes systematically represent a certain belief system. Interpretation of allegory can involve two or more levels of meaning.
In literature, something that is chosen to take on a particular meaning by the writer, e.g. clouds as symbols of mutability.
