Definition
A form of church music in which material from the Biblical book of Psalms is versified with as few changes as possible, for singing to repeated, regular melodies. This type of music was popular from the Reformation onwards, and there is still a strong tradition of metrical psalmody in Scotland.1. Term for a worshipping community of Christians.
2. The building in which Christians traditionally meet for worship.
3. The worldwide community of Christian believers.
Term given to the movements of church reform which in the sixteenth century resulted in new Protestant churches being created as an alternative to the Roman Catholic Church.
Essentially the hymn book of the Jerusalem temple, expressing the whole range of human emotion, from dark depression to exuberant joy; many attributed to David.
