A-Z: General definitions: Phaethon
Definition
1. In Greek mythology he was the son of Helios. In the version of the myth given by Ovid Phaethon wanted evidence that his father really was the sun god. As proof he was allowed to drive the chariot that pulled the sun across the sky for one day. He lost control of the horses and started to plunge towards earth, but Zeus struck him down with a thunderbolt to prevent earth being burned up.
2. An early nineteenth century open sided carriage with large wheels, the equivalent of a performance car today.
43Bc- AD17. Latin poet born in Italy. His major works are Ars amatoria (Art of Love) and Metamorphoses.
Son of Cronos, ruler and chief of the Greek gods, originally a sky-god. (Roman name: Jupiter.)
