A-Z: General definitions: Pop culture

Definition

In sociology, popular culture is the term given to cultural products such as music, art, literature, fashion, dance, film, television, and radio that are consumed mainly by groups such as the working, lower, and middle class.

[There are two opposing arguments in relation to popular culture. One is that the élite class (the people at the top of the class system – the ‘leaders’ who control the mass media and popular culture outlets) use popular culture to control those below them because it dulls people’s minds, and makes them passive and easy to control. The second argument is that popular culture is a vehicle for rebellion against the dominant groups mentioned above.]
