A-Z: General definitions: Prometheus
Definition
Prometheus ' 'Forethought' in Greek - created the human race from clay. Later he stole fire from Hephaestus' forge and gave it to mankind against the wishes of Zeus. In a rage Zeus punished Prometheus by having him chained to a mountain peak in the Caucasus. Every day an eagle gnawed at Prometheus' liver, but this was restored to health the following night. According to some versions, Heracles rescued him from this terrible fate.
