Definition
A renowned First World War poet. Wilfred Owen met Sassoon at Craiglockhart where he had been sent after having his Declaration against the War read out in the House of Commons. Sassoon’s friend and fellow poet Robert Graves had convinced the review board that Sassoon was suffering from shell-shock in order to avoid a Court Marshal.
World War I, also know as the First World War and the Great War, was a global conflict from 1914 – 1918, centred in Europe, involving all the world’s major economic powers in two opposing alliances.
A large Victorian building in Edinburgh, Scotland that was requisitioned by the military in 1916 and turned into a war hospital for the treatment of shell-shocked officers.
