A-Z: General definitions: Pilgrim's Progress
Definition
John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress (published in 1678, with a second part in 1686) tells the story of a representative figure of humankind who leaves his home and family in the City of Destruction to set off for the Celestial City of heaven.
The two main cities mentioned in the Bible are Babylon and Jerusalem, where God was believed to dwell. The New Testament speaks of the New Jerusalem a heavenly city, where there will be no more death or pain.
In many religions, the place where God dwells, and to which believers aspire after their death. Sometimes known as Paradise.
