Definition

John the Baptist announced that the coming Messiah would baptise with the Holy Spirit 'and with fire' (Matthew 3:11). When the disciples received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost 'tongues of fire' were said to have rested on their heads (Acts 2:1-4). The phrase came to be associated with periods of suffering and persecution.
