Definition

1. In the Old Testament fire is a symbol of God's presence as in the book of Exodus where Moses meets with God at the burning bush (Exodus 3:2-6). God also appeared as a pillar of fire to lead the Israelites out of Egypt (Exodus 13:21-22). In the New Testament the Holy Spirit comes to the disciples on the day of Pentecost as 'tongues of fire' (Acts 2:3-4). 2. Fire is also used to represent punishment (Revelation 20:10). See Fire and Brimstone. 3. Fire also has a purgatorial meaning, burning away the impure to leave the pure (1 Corinthians 3:12-14)
