A-Z: General definitions: Burning Bush

Definition

According to the book of Exodus in the Old Testament, Moses saw a bush that burned on Mount Horeb without being consumed by the fire (Exodus 3:2-4). When he went to investigate, God spoke to him from the bush, instructing him to return to Egypt to deliver the Israelites from slavery. God also told Moses his name 'I AM THAT I AM' (Exodus 3:14). The Burning Bush was later interpreted as a symbol of the purity of the Virgin Mary.
