A-Z: General definitions: Box set
Definition
A realistically detailed, three-walled, roofed theatrical setting that simulates a room with the fourth wall (the one closest to the audience) removed. Authentic details include real doors and windows, often backed with outdoor scenery, stairways and furniture. The box set was widely used at the end of the nineteenth century and is a common feature of modern theatre.
