Definition

Title (eventually used as name) given to Jesus, referring to an anointed person set apart for a special task such as a king. In the New Testament, Jesus was regarded as the fulfillment of Jewish prophecy about a Messiah (John 1:40-42). In Christian belief, he is seen as divine, part of the Godhead or Trinity, as the Son of God (Hebrews 1:1-3).
