A-Z: General definitions: Goat

Definition

In the Bible goats are often associated with sin and the need for forgiveness. In the Old Testament book of Leviticus two goats were used to take on the sins of the people and bring them forgiveness - one was sacrificed and the other, the 'scapegoat', was sent out into the desert carrying away the sins of the people (Leviticus 16:6-22). In the New Testament Jesus separates the sheep from the goats, the sheep representing those who are accepted by God, and the goats representing those who are condemned (Matthew 25:31-46). See also scapegoat.
