A-Z: General definitions: Graven Image

Definition

The term 'graven image' is used in the Bible to describe a carved figure of a god, or an idol. In the Ten Commandments the people of Israel were specifically told not to make graven images (Exodus 20:4; Deuteronomy 5:8). They were not to imagine what God looked like. There are many instances in the Old Testament where this commandment was ignored (Exodus 32:32-33; 1 Kings 12:28) and God was angry.
