A-Z: General definitions: Herod the Great

Definition

Herod the Great was born c.73BCE, and became the King of Judea in 42BCE. He was King when Jesus was born in Bethlehem. The Bible records that when the Wise Men told Herod that a new 'king of the Jews' had been born, he sent them to find the child. When they did not return to him, Herod ordered the slaughter of all male children under two years old in Bethlehem and its vicinity (see Slaughter of the innocents). Jesus escaped the massacre as his father was warned in a dream to go to Egypt (Matthew 2:1-18).
