Definition
In the Bible these were traditional enemies of the Israelites in the territory of Israel. Samson fought them, and Goliath was a Philistine. Their desecration of the Israelite shrine at Shiloh meant that the name has become a by-word for anyone culturally ignorant or destructive.
The Christian Bible consists of the Old Testament scriptures inherited from Judaism, together with the New Testament, drawn from writings produced from c.40-125CE, which describe the life of Jesus and the establishment of the Christian church.
Descendants of Israel (Jacob) and occupants of Israel.
The Old Testament frequently refers to Israel as the Promised Land allocated to God's children. Prophecies refer to it as his chosen nation and the one out of which the Messiah would come.
In the Old Testament, Samson was the last of the major judges who ruled Israel.
In the Old Testament a Philistine giant who opposed the Israelite army. He was killed with a slingshot by David, who was then only a boy.
An act of destructive or contemptuous treatment of something sacred.
