Definition

To replace or put back something which has been lost or damaged. In English history, the term especially applies to the Restoration of the monarchy when King Charles II returned to England in 1660 after 11 years of republican rule, following the execution of his father, Charles I. The term also refers to drama of the period, in new theatres, where women were for the first time allowed to act on the public stage in England.
