A-Z: General definitions: Harrowing of Hell

Definition

The belief that while Christ's body rested in the tomb, between his death and resurrection, his spirit descended into hell to free the souls of the righteous (1 Peter 3:19; 1 Peter 4:6). This idea was expanded in the apocryphal 'Gospel of Nicodemus' and was often portrayed in medieval art and literature.
