A-Z: General definitions: Road to Damascus
Definition
Scene of the dramatic conversion of Paul in the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament. Used as a metaphor for a life changing event, revelation, or decision. Damascus is located in Syria.
The 'Apostle to the Gentiles' (d. c. CE 65). Paul had a major role in setting up the Early Church and is believed to be the author of several letters in the Bible.
The fifth book of the New Testament. Usually attributed to Luke. 'The Acts of the Apostles' describes the coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples of Jesus and the subsequent growth of the Early Church.
The twelve disciples chosen and commissioned by Jesus to share his mission.
A 'testament' is a covenant (binding agreement), a term used in the Bible of God's relationship with his people. The New Testament is the second part of the Christian Bible. Its name comes from the new covenant or relationship with God.
An image or form of comparison where one thing is said actually to be another - e.g. 'fleecy clouds'.
