Definition
Sensation fiction is a literary sub-genre of Gothic literature and is sometimes regarded as domesticated Gothic in that it uses many of the devices of the Gothic novel, but places them in a contemporary English setting. See Gothic and sensation fiction
One of the main divisions of literature, being a narrative prose genre.

Work of romantic fiction which evokes an atmosphere of mystery and terror. The first example was Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto, published in 1765.
