A-Z: Famous stories from the Bible: Bartimaeus

Definition

Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho and, as usual, they were surrounded by a large and noisy crowd. A blind man called Bartimaeus, who sat and begged by the side of that road, found out that it Bartimaeus, photo by Haffitt, available through Creative Commonswas Jesus who was coming. He shouted out,

‘Jesus! Son of David! Please help me!’

Some in the crowd told him not to bother Jesus, but this made him shout all the more loudly: he did not want to miss this chance.

Jesus told people to bring the man to him. When he was standing in front of him, Jesus asked him,

‘What do you want me to do for you?’

Bartimaeus replied,

Rabbi, I want to be able to see.’

‘Because you believe in me and in my power,’ Jesus said, ‘you have been healed.’

Immediately, the man could see, and he joined in the crowd following Jesus out of Jericho.

The story illustrates:

  • The importance of faith
  • One aspect of Jesus’ power – over sickness and disability.
