A-Z: Famous stories from the Bible: Jesus calms a storm

Definition

Jesus calms the stormAll day, Jesus had been teaching the crowds by the side of the lake known as the Sea of Galilee. Now, it was late and he was tired. He asked the disciples to take him over to the other side of the lake. They climbed into a boat, and the disciples began to row across. Soon, Jesus was asleep in the stern of the boat.

Suddenly, one of the lake’s unpredictable storms blew up. The small boat was tossed violently about. Even the fishermen among the disciples panicked. They shook Jesus awake, crying,

‘Teacher! Don’t you even care that we might drown?’

Jesus stood up immediately and said to the rough water,

‘Quiet! Be calm!’

At once the wind died down and the water was calm and flat.

Jesus asked the disciples,

‘Why were you so frightened? Do you have no trust in me?’

The disciples were troubled. They asked each other just who this man was who could command even the wind and the water.

The story illustrates:

  • One aspect of Jesus’ miraculous power – his control of Nature
  • The disciples’ lack of faith in him even though they had already witnessed several miracles.
