A-Z: Famous stories from the Bible: Jesus, his ascension

Definition

The disciples saw Jesus several times after they found out he was alive again following his death on the Cross. He often talked to them about God and the Kingdom of Heaven. One day, during a meal, he told them that they were not to leave Jerusalem until the promised gift – the Holy Spirit – had come to them.

Forty days after his Resurrection, Jesus met them and said,

The Ascension of Christ‘When the Holy Spirit comes to you, you will receive power and you will be able to be my messengers, both here in this country and throughout the world.’

As soon as he had finished speaking, he was taken up into the sky while they watched, until a cloud hid him from their view. While they stood there, trying to see where he had gone, two men appeared before them and asked why they were still looking into the sky.

‘This Jesus,’ they said, ‘who has just left you will come back to you in the same way.’

The story illustrates:

  • The belief that Jesus would send the Holy Spirit to help his followers to carry out the task he had given them
  • The belief that Jesus will return in the Second Coming at the end of the world.
