A-Z: Famous stories from the Bible: Jesus heals a man let down through the roof

Definition

Jesus heals a man let down through the roofOne day Jesus was in a house teaching and ministering to a large crowd gathered from a wide area, using the power of God to heal people. A paralytic man was carried to the house to receive healing, however it was so crowded that his stretcher-bearers could not enter. So the men took their friend up onto the roof, removed the roof tiles and lowered him down right in front of Jesus. Jesus said to him, ‘Man, your sins are forgiven you.’ (ESV Luke 5:20.)

The Pharisees there were angry and accused Jesus of blasphemy, since they knew that only God had the authority to forgive sins. Jesus countered by asking whether it was easier to heal people or forgive them their sins. Then he demonstrated that he had the authority to do both by telling the paralytic to get up and walk. The man did so immediately and walked home, praising God.

The whole crowd were amazed and filled with awe. They praised and glorified God for what they had seen.

The story illustrates:

  • Jesus had God’s power to heal people, even those deemed incurable
  • By healing the man, Jesus showed he had the power to forgive people their sins
  • Christians believe that this story proves that Jesus was the son of God, because only God can forgive sin.
