Definition
(1609 - 1669) Unpopular French, Catholic wife of the English king Charles I and mother of his two heirs, Charles II and James II. Towards the end of the English Civil War she fled into exile in France, ruled by her nephew, King Louis XIV, where she stayed until the Restoration.
Charles I (1600-49) succeeded to the English throne in 1625, but after the English Civil War of 1642-46 was deposed by Oliver Cromwell leading an army loyal to Parliament and subsequently executed.
King of England from 1660 when the monarchy was restored after the English Civil War and Commonwealth period.
English monarch who succeeded to the throne in 1685.
(1642-51). Series of military conflicts which rose out of religious, political and financial tensions between King Charles I and Parliament, which was increasingly influenced by Puritan sympathies.
To replace or put back something which has been lost or damaged. In English history, the term especially applies to the Restoration of the monarchy when King Charles II returned to England in 1660 after 11 years of republican rule.
