A-Z: General definitions: Thomas Cranmer
Definition
(1489-1556) A leader in the English Reformation. As the Archbishop of Canterbury during the reign of Henry VIII Cranmer was instrumental in the separation of the Church of England from the Catholic Church. He authored the first two versions of the Book of Common Prayer. He was imprisoned by the Catholic Queen Mary Tudor and after two years was burnt as a heretic.
The series of events during the sixteenth century which changed England from a Catholic country under the authority of the Pope, to a predominantly Protestant country whose monarch was the head of the Church of England.
The senior bishop of England with responsibility to oversee the worship, teaching, discipleship and mission of the Church of England.
