A-Z: General definitions: Whitsun

Definition

This name came to be attached to the feast of Pentecost because of its being a major occasion for baptisms, where the candidates were frequently clothed in white. In full terms, 'White Sunday'. This is the name given in the Christian calendar to the annual celebration of the day, fifty days after Christ's resurrection from the dead and ten days after his ascension into heaven, when the disciples of Christ received the Holy Spirit, which manifested itself as a 'strong wind' and 'tongues of flame' (Acts 2:1-12). This association, and it being a spring holiday, also made it a popular time to get married or to be baptised, when candidates would wear white. See Whit Sunday.
