A-Z: General definitions: Widow

Definition

In the Bible, the widow is sometimes portrayed as an example of affliction and desolation. For example when Jerusalem is destroyed by the Babylonians, the city is compared to a widow's mourning (Lamentations 1:1-2). God is depicted as one who cares passionately for the welfare and justice of widows (Psalms 146:9). The Old Testament story of Ruth depicts her movement from widowhood to marriage and motherhood.
