Definition

In the Bible, 'washing' refers not just to physical washing, but can also have spiritual significance. 1. Washing is linked with hospitality (Genesis 18:1-5). 2. In the Old Testament it is used in preparing for encounter with God (Exodus 19:10) and with removal of ceremonial uncleanliness (e.g. Leviticus 11:25). In the New Testament, Jesus criticised the Pharisees because they carried out external washing rituals, but were inwardly corrupt (Luke 11:37-41). 3. The washing of feet is an image of servanthood (John 13:2-5). 4. Christ's death and resurrection are seen providing the possibility of complete cleansing from sin.
