A-Z: General definitions: Water

Definition

An essential ingredient for life, water has many meanings in the Bible: 1. God has mastery over the seas (Job 38:8-11; Mark 4:35-41). 2. Water is seen as a force of judgement. The great flood which Noah survived is an example (Genesis 6:17). The witholding of rain was seen as divine displeasure (1 Kings 8:35). 3. Ceremonial cleansing. The Law of Moses described many different ways that water had to be used to cleanse bodies, food, cooking utensils and clothing. Water is used for baptism to signify the forgiveness of sins (Mark 1:4-5). 4. An image of the Holy Spirit (John 7:37-39). 5. An image of eternal life (Revelation 22:17).
