A-Z: General definitions: Closed Couplet
Definition
Lines of iambic pentameter which rhyme in pairs, that are logically or grammatically complete. Particularly associated with Augustan verse and, in drama, signifying the end of a scene.
A term used of speech rhythms in blank verse; an iambic rhythm is an unstressed, or weak, beat followed by a stressed, or strong, beat. It is a rising metre.
A line containing five stressed syllables or feet.
1. Belonging to the age of the Roman Emperor Augustus. 2. A period in eighteenth century English literature when classical models were adopted.
