Definition
A period of particularly violent repression by a ruler or government. This is epitomised by the French Revolution when thousands of people were killed by the guillotine. See article on the Impact of the French Revolution.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, resulted in the overthrow of the French monarchy and ultimately helped Napoleon Bonaparte to seize control in 1799.
