A-Z: Famous stories from the Bible: The Good Shepherd

Jesus said, ‘I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd is willing to die for his sheep because he loves them so much. Someone who is paid to look after the sheep will not be willing to face danger for them. If such a person sees a wolf coming, he will leave the sheep to their fate and save himself. What are the sheep to him? He is just paid to look after them. He does not love and cherish them.’

‘I am the good shepherd. I know all of my sheep and each one of them knows me. In the same way, my Father knows me and I know him. I lay down my life for the sheep – willingly and knowingly.’

The story illustrates:

  • The idea, found several times in the Bible, that God acts like a loving shepherd, protecting, caring for and rescuing his sheep.
  • The belief that, because of his love for human beings, Jesus was willing to die on the Cross to bring them forgiveness by taking humanity’s punishment upon himself.
