Definition

In the beginning, before there was anything, God made the heavens and the earth. The earth was empty and dark but the Spirit of God was over the deep water. Then God said, ‘Let there be light!’

and light shone out. God saw the light was good, and he separated it from the darkness. He called the light ‘day’ and the darkness ‘night’. That was the first evening and the first morning.

Then God created the sky and separated the waters above the sky from the waters below it. This was the second day. On the third day, God gathered the waters below the sky into seas and oceans and the dry land appeared. God created plants of all kinds to grow on the land. He was very pleased with all he had done.

Creation On the fourth day, God made the sun to light the day and the stars and the moon to light the night. Again, he was pleased by what he saw. On the next day, he called into existence all the creatures of the seas and all the birds of the air.

Now it was the sixth day. God created all the creatures of the land: the dry land was filled with animals of all kinds. Now the Earth was ready: God made people in his own image. He made them male and female and put them in charge of the Earth and of every other creature on it and told them that all the green plants were theirs for food. God saw that all he had made was very good. On the next day he made nothing more because everything was completed. This seventh day God made holy, because on it he rested from his work.

¹Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. ²And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. ³So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. ⁴These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens. ⁵When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up - for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, ⁶and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground - ⁷then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. ⁸And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. ⁹And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food.
