Note on chapter numbering
Note on chapter numbering
Jane Eyre was first published in October 1847 in three volumes, as was the usual practice for novels at that time. In the first edition, the chapter numbers started from 1 in each volume. Some modern editions ignore the original three-volume format and number the chapters straight through from 1 to 38. Since this guide is intended to be applicable to any modern edition of the novel, both systems of numbering are used.
