Shakespeare's stage would have had very little scenery, if any, to help the audience decide where each scene took place. (See also The Theatre) Nor would they have had curtains closing or lights changing to let them know that the end of a scene had arrived – this would be marked by the comments of the characters, the use of a rhyming couplet (see also Shakespeare's Language) or the arrival of a new set of characters on stage (see also Structure). In this way, the audience would, in their imagination, move around within the city of Vienna in which Measure for Measure is set.
