Definition

Babylon, the capital city of Babylonia in ancient Mesopotamia (mostly modern Iraq), mentioned some 200 times in the Bible. The Old Testament depicts Babylon as a magnificent yet sinful, proud and pagan city. The Babylonians were the traditional enemy of the Israelites who were eventually exiled to Babylon. In Revelation (New Testament), Babylon is portrayed as the symbol of all that is wrong (Revelation 17:5).
