Definition

(Boece) c. A.D. 480-524. He was a Roman statesman and philosopher who advocated justice for the poor, which aroused his enemies, who accused him of high treason. He was imprisoned in the tower at Pavia then executed. His works include De consolatione philosophiae (Consolation of Philosophy) which was written while in prison charged with treason. It achieved widespread popularity in succeeding centuries. It was translated into Anglo-Saxon during the reign of Alfred and strongly influenced Chaucer who also made a translation.
