A-Z: Famous stories from the Bible: David and Goliath

Definition

This is one of the most famous stories from the Old Testament. Set in the time of Saul, Israel's first king, it tells of a time when Israel was oppressed by the Philistines, a neighbouring war-like tribe who David and Goliathhad already several times defeated the Israelites in battle. On this occasion, the Philistines parade their champion, Goliath, a giant of a man, in font of the terrified Israelites. He issues a challenge to them, to send one of their number to engage him in single-handed combat. Up steps a young shepherd boy, David (destined to be Israel's king), enraged by Goliath's taunts and insults and convinced that God will help him overcome the enemy. He confronts Goliath armed only with a sling and a stone, but hits him on the forehead and kills him instantly, leading to a Philistine retreat. The story illustrates: ' that Israel's God cannot be defied without consequences ' the need to trust that God can bring victory without military paraphernalia.
