St John the Evangelist on Patmos by Hieronymous Bosch Many years after Jesus’ ascension back to heaven, his disciple John received a symbolic vision which was in two sections.

The first part concerned the members of seven churches in different parts of the then known world. God had a different message for each one of the churches; some messages were encouraging, some were rebukes, but all contained words of instruction and exhortation. God wanted all of them to remain faithful in their love and their obedience to their calling as followers of Jesus.

The second part concerned events which, according to the Bible, are to happen when world history comes to an end and the present earth ceases to exist. In those last days, evil will be conquered and banished forever. God will judge all humanity. Those who have rejected him and his Son will be ejected from God’s presence, and the source of all evil, the Beast or Satan, will be destroyed. Those who have followed and loved God on earth will be incorporated in God’s new heaven and new earth, living with him for ever. Jesus is depicted as the Lamb of God, symbolising his sacrificial death to redeem those who believe in him. The celebration in heaven is depicted as a wedding feast, with Jesus as the bridegroom and all who have loved him symbolised as his bride. There will be nothing but joy, celebration and worship of God for all eternity.

¹The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, ²who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw. ³Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near. ⁴John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, ⁵and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. ¹⁶On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords. ¹⁷Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and with a loud voice he called to all the birds that fly directly overhead, Come, gather for the great supper of God, ¹⁸to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all men, both free and slave, both small and great. ¹⁹And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to make war against him who was sitting on the horse and against his army. ²⁰And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur. ²¹And the rest were slain by the sword that came from the mouth of him who was sitting on the horse, and all the birds were gorged with their flesh.

After that he must be released for a little while. ⁴Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. ⁵The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.
