Note on chapter numbering

When Great Expectations was first published in book form (in July 1861), it appeared in three volumes, with the chapter numbers starting from 1 in each volume. Some editions nowadays ignore the three-volume format and number the chapters straight through from 1 to 59. Both systems of numbering are used here and the instalment numbers are also given. Dickens added some chapter headings in an edition of Great Expectations that appeared in 1867 and 1868, and these are also shown at the start of each chapter.
