Word of God
The written Word
The belief that God speaks to human beings through holy writings or ‘scripture' is important within many religions. To Jews, the Hebrew Bible, which Christians refer to as the Old Testament, is the basis and the main authority for their faith. To Christians, both the Old Testament, which is the first part of the Bible, as well as the New Testament, which is the second part of the Bible and focuses on the life and teaching of Jesus Christ, are of great importance to their faith.
The Bible: a library in one book
The word ‘Bible' simply means ‘books'. This is because it is not a single book, but rather a collection of 66 volumes, written by many different authors, in 
different genres, over a period of hundreds of years. It contains ancient stories which convey meaning through symbolic language, metaphors, historical accounts, poetry, prophecy and visions, biographies, theology, apocalyptic literature as well as wise advice and rules for living. Some of these are understood to stand for all time; others are often understood to have been given for the specific time in which they were written. The Bible contains stories of love and violence, greed and compassion, suffering and joy.
The Bible: the word of God
The Bible is often described as the ‘word of God' and many of its pages portray an immanent God who relates to human beings and is involved in the reality of their everyday lives. Throughout the Old Testament, we read of God speaking to individuals such as Noah, Abraham, Moses, David and Solomon, as well as to whole communities. God's word, described in terms of a range of synonyms such as law, teachings, instructions and commands, is the subject of the longest chapter in the book of Psalms, Psalm 119. It includes metaphors such as ‘Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path' (Psalms 119:105), and similes like ‘How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!' (Psalms 119:103).
In the New Testament, Paul writes to his young protégé Timothy, ‘All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching the truth, rebuking error, correcting faults, and giving instruction for right living' (2 Timothy 3:16), and the author of 1 Peter writes, ‘The word of the Lord endures forever' (1 Peter 1:23-25).
The sword of God
Two New Testament writers also speak of God's Word as a sword. Paul, using the imagery of a Roman soldier's armour to teach his readers how to resist temptation and spiritual attack, says, ‘Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God' (Ephesians 6:17). The writer to the Hebrews, on the other hand, uses the imagery to describe the effect of the word of God on the reader:
‘For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.' (Hebrews 4:12).
The spoken Word
The term ‘Prophets' often refers to a group of people in the Old Testament who were used by God to deliver his messages to the Israelites. Many of the statements of the Old Testament Prophets begin with the phrase ‘The Lord says...', e.g. Isaiah 43:1. The prophet Jeremiah describes his experience by comparing God's word to fire, ‘His word is in my heart like a fire', and claims he cannot keep God's message to himself but feels compelled to pass it on, even if it makes him unpopular (Jeremiah 20:9). The Prophet Ezekiel describes being given a scroll with a message from God and being told to eat it, in order to then tell the people of Israel whatever God gives him to say. In the New Testament, the author of 2 Peter comments on the prophets' messages, ‘prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit' (2 Peter 1:21).
Jesus the Word
While the Bible is often seen as God's written word, and the prophets were understood to deliver God's spoken word, Jesus is portrayed in the New Testament as being God's living word.
The New Testament letter to the Hebrews begins with the words,
In the past, God spoke to our ancestors many times and in many ways through the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us through his Son. He reflects the brightness of God's glory and is the exact likeness of God's own being, sustaining the universe by his powerful word. (Hebrews 1:1-3)
In the first chapter of the gospel of John, Jesus is also referred to as the ‘word' (Greek: ‘Logos'), and is claimed to have existed from the beginning of time, as being the agent of the creation of the world, and as being (the same as) God (John 1:1-3). 20My soul is consumed with longing for your rules at all times. 21You rebuke the insolent, accursed ones, who wander from your commandments. 22Take away from me scorn and contempt, for I have kept your testimonies. 23Even though princes sit plotting against me, your servant will meditate on your statutes. 24Your testimonies are my delight; they are my counselors. 25My soul clings to the dust; give me life according to your word! 26When I told of my ways, you answered me; teach me your statutes! 27Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous works. 28My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to your word! 29Put false ways far from me and graciously teach me your law! 30I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I set your rules before me. 31I cling to your testimonies, O Lord; let me not be put to shame! 32I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart! It is my meditation all the day. 98Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies, for it is ever with me. 99I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation. 100I understand more than the aged, for I keep your precepts. 101I hold back my feet from every evil way, in order to keep your word. 102I do not turn aside from your rules, for you have taught me. 103How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! 104Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. 105Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. 106I have sworn an oath and confirmed it, to keep your righteous rules. 107I am severely afflicted; give me life, O Lord, according to your word! 108Accept my freewill offerings of praise, O Lord, and teach me your rules. 109I hold my life in my hand continually, but I do not forget your law. 110The wicked have laid a snare for me, but I do not stray from your precepts. 111Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart. 112I incline my heart to perform your statutes forever, to the end. 113I hate the double-minded, but I love your law. 114You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in your word. 115Depart from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commandments of my God. 116Uphold me according to your promise, that I may live, and let me not be put to shame in my hope! 117Hold me up, that I may be safe and have regard for your statutes continually! 118You spurn all who go astray from your statutes, for their cunning is in vain. 119All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross, therefore I love your testimonies. 120My flesh trembles for fear of you, and I am afraid of your judgments. 121I have done what is just and right; do not leave me to my oppressors. 122Give your servant a pledge of good; let not the insolent oppress me. 123My eyes long for your salvation and for the fulfillment of your righteous promise. 124Deal with your servant according to your steadfast love, and teach me your statutes. 125I am your servant; give me understanding, that I may know your testimonies! 126It is time for the Lord to act, for your law has been broken. 127Therefore I love your commandments above gold, above fine gold. 128Therefore I consider all your precepts to be right; I hate every false way. 129Your testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul keeps them. 130The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple. 131I open my mouth and pant, because I long for your commandments. 132Turn to me and be gracious to me, as is your way with those who love your name. 133Keep steady my steps according to your promise, and let no iniquity get dominion over me. 134Redeem me from man's oppression, that I may keep your precepts. 135Make your face shine upon your servant, and teach me your statutes. 136My eyes shed streams of tears, because people do not keep your law. 137Righteous are you, O Lord, and right are your rules. 138You have appointed your testimonies in righteousness and in all faithfulness. 139My zeal consumes me, because my foes forget your words. 140Your promise is well tried, and your servant loves it. 141I am small and despised, yet I do not forget your precepts. 142Your righteousness is righteous forever, and your law is true. 143Trouble and anguish have found me out, but your commandments are my delight. 144Your testimonies are righteous forever; give me understanding that I may live. 145With my whole heart I cry; answer me, O Lord! I will keep your statutes. 146I call to you; save me, that I may observe your testimonies. 147I rise before dawn and cry for help; I hope in your words. 148My eyes are awake before the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promise. 149Hear my voice according to your steadfast love; O Lord, according to your justice give me life. 150They draw near who persecute me with evil purpose; they are far from your law. 151But you are near, O Lord, and all your commandments are true. 152Long have I known from your testimonies that you have founded them forever. 153Look on my affliction and deliver me, for I do not forget your law. 154Plead my cause and redeem me; give me life according to your promise! 155Salvation is far from the wicked, for they do not seek your statutes. 156Great is your mercy, O Lord; give me life according to your rules. 157Many are my persecutors and my adversaries, but I do not swerve from your testimonies. 158I look at the faithless with disgust, because they do not keep your commands. 159Consider how I love your precepts! Give me life according to your steadfast love. 160The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever. 161Princes persecute me without cause, but my heart stands in awe of your words. 162I rejoice at your word like one who finds great spoil. 163I hate and abhor falsehood, but I love your law. 164Seven times a day I praise you for your righteous rules. 165Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble. 166I hope for your salvation, O Lord, and I do your commandments. 167My soul keeps your testimonies; I love them exceedingly. 168I keep your precepts and testimonies, for all my ways are before you. 169Let my cry come before you, O Lord; give me understanding according to your word! 170Let my plea come before you; deliver me according to your word. 171My lips will pour forth praise, for you teach me your statutes. 172My tongue will sing of your word, for all your commandments are right. 173Let your hand be ready to help me, for I have chosen your precepts. 174I long for your salvation, O Lord, and your law is my delight. 175Let my soul live and praise you, and let your rules help me. 176I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek your servant, for I do not forget your commandments.

and have comforted myself. 53Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake thy law. 54Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage. 55I have remembered thy name, O LORD, in the night, and have kept thy law. 56This I had, because I kept thy precepts. 57Thou art my portion, O LORD: I have said that I would keep thy words. 58I intreated thy favour with my whole heart: be merciful unto me according to thy word. 59I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto thy testimonies. 60I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments. 61The bands of the wicked have robbed me: but I have not forgotten thy law. 62At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments. 63I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts. 64The earth, O LORD, is full of thy mercy: teach me thy statutes. 65Thou hast dealt well with thy servant, O LORD, according unto thy word. 66Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments. 67Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word. 68Thou art good, and doest good; teach me thy statutes. 69The proud have forged a lie against me: but I will keep thy precepts with my whole heart. 70Their heart is as fat as grease; but I delight in thy law. 71It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes. 72The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver. 73Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments. 74They that fear thee will be glad when they see me; because I have hoped in thy word. 75I know, O LORD, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me. 76Let, I pray thee, thy merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to thy word unto thy servant. 77Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy law is my delight. 78Let the proud be ashamed; for they dealt perversely with me without a cause: but I will meditate in thy precepts. 79Let those that fear thee turn unto me, and those that have known thy testimonies. 80Let my heart be sound in thy statutes; that I be not ashamed. 81My soul fainteth for thy salvation: but I hope in thy word. 82Mine eyes fail for thy word, saying, When wilt thou comfort me? 83For I am become like a bottle in the smoke; yet do I not forget thy statutes. 84How many are the days of thy servant? when wilt thou execute judgment on them that persecute me? 85The proud have digged pits for me, which are not after thy law. 86All thy commandments are faithful: they persecute me wrongfully; 1But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. 6For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, 7always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. 8Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith. 9But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men. 10You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra - which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. 12Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

1Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. 2For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened. 3For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said, As I swore in my wrath, They shall not enter my rest, although his works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way: And God rested on the seventh day from all his works. 5And again in this passage he said, They shall not enter my rest. 6Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, 7again he appoints a certain day, Today, saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted, Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts. 8For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. 9So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 10for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. 11Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. 12For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. 14Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

1Now Pashhur the priest, the son of Immer, who was chief officer in the house of the Lord, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. 2Then Pashhur beat Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the upper Benjamin Gate of the house of the Lord. 3The next day, when Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, The Lord does not call your name Pashhur, but Terror on Every Side. 4For thus says the Lord: Behold, I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends. They shall fall by the sword of their enemies while you look on. And I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon. He shall carry them captive to Babylon, and shall strike them down with the sword. 5Moreover, I will give all the wealth of the city, all its gains, all its prized belongings, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah into the hand of their enemies, who shall plunder them and seize them and carry them to Babylon. 6And you, Pashhur, and all who dwell in your house, shall go into captivity. To Babylon you shall go, and there you shall die, and there you shall be buried, you and all your friends, to whom you have prophesied falsely. 7O Lord, you have deceived me, and I was deceived; you are stronger than I, and you have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all the day; everyone mocks me. 8For whenever I speak, I cry out, I shout, Violence and destruction! For the word of the Lord has become for me a reproach and derision all day long. 9If I say, I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name, there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot. 10For I hear many whispering. Terror is on every side! Denounce him! Let us denounce him! say all my close friends, watching for my fall. Perhaps he will be deceived; then we can overcome him and take our revenge on him. 11But the Lord is with me as a dread warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble; they will not overcome me. They will be greatly shamed, for they will not succeed. Their eternal dishonor will never be forgotten. 12O Lord of hosts, who tests the righteous, who sees the heart and the mind, let me see your vengeance upon them, for to you have I committed my cause. 13Sing to the Lord; praise the Lord! John is quite unlike the other gospels in its concentration on the significance of Jesus as seen through the eyes of the beloved Disciple who was almost certainly John the son of Zebedee, the traditional author of this gospel. It is the gospel of signs and includes the unique series of I am sayings by Jesus e.g. 'I am the way, the truth and the life'. This recalls the portrayal of God as the I AM in the Old Testament (Ex 3:14).
