Imagery and symbolism in The Leaden Echo and the Golden Echo

According to Hopkins and the Bible, the very act of self-surrender creates a spiritual beauty (‘beauty-in-the-ghost') now ‘long before death'. And that beauty is ‘kept', and, therefore, does not fade. The sense of ‘kept' is one that Hopkins derives from several verses from the New Testament:

‘I am persuaded that he (God) is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.' (2 Timothy 1:12)

And

‘Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed at the last time.' (1 Peter 1:5 AV)
