  • ‘all thy bones with beauty'.

This is in stark contrast to the medieval depictions of death as a hideous skeleton dragging people off to hell. It is not that Herbert dismisses death, or de-personalises it.

    • Does death being ‘Much in request' suggest some sort of death-wish?
  • Can you imagine a state of mind that is not suicidal, yet which can say ‘to die is gain' (see Philippians 1:21)?
