Themes in Ascension - Hymn

Death as a friend

There is a general sense of mystical Perceptions of God, though the focus is more on the state of heaven itself and the Personal freedom of soul there. So we move on to the theme of Death as friend. Death is a friend in the sense that it offers release. At worst, it is removal to ‘that hill', a natural feature rather than a tomb. It is the body which is the tomb; death dissolves it.

Investigating Ascension - Hymn
  • Consider the themes of Ascension - Hymn
    • What is the force of ‘that hill' (l.39)?
    • Why will Vaughan ‘need no glass' there? (Look at 1 Corinthians 13:12)
